2018 Porsche Cayenne vs. 2018 Tesla Model X

The 2018 Porsche Cayenne is equipped with a dynamic engine, exceptional handling, and lots of options for customization. However, a new rival has emerged, in the form of the Tesla Model X, an electric SUV that offers great performance, top of the line amenities, and a relaxing ride. Which of them is the best?

Design & Style

The Tesla Model X avoids the large square frame found in most SUVs in favor of sleek edges which are aerodynamically inclined. The design is geared towards getting the most out of the battery the vehicle uses, so it has a circular rounded shape that resembles a teardrop. Like other Tesla models, it is slightly futuristic. The Porsche Cayenne also aims for sleek curves in its design. It has a lot of characteristics which resemble the 911 but also has an array which is a quad element, with an extended hood and miniature hatch spoilers in the rear. Surfaces in the interior are also curvy, with analog controls.

Technology & Safety

The Porsche Cayenne is equipped with a total of six airbags, pretensioners for seat belts, a surround view camera, warnings for lane departures and collisions, adaptive headlights and cruise control. Buyers have the option to add skid plates, which will aid the vehicle when descending down hills and tough terrain. Inside, passengers will be treated to touch screens that are 7 inches, front seats that can be power adjusted, and climate control which is dual zone. The NHTSA has given the Tesla Model X stellar ratings. This is due to its many active safety systems, such as monitoring for blind spots, emergency brakes which are automated, lane control and autopilot. Within the cabin the Model X is extremely opulent, offering passengers’ comforts such as touch screens which are 17 inches, ambient lights that use LEDs, ignition which is keyless, power windows and climate control which is dual zone.

The Tesla Model X has impressive acceleration. The base model has a 193-kilowatt motor that can produce the equivalent of 259 horsepower. Drivers can upgrade it further for increased performance and superior electronic systems. The Porsche Cayenne comes with a standard V6, 3.6-liter engine that can produce up to 300 horsepower with 295 pounds of torque. Tests indicate that it can go from zero to sixty in about 7.3 seconds, and more advanced models have much faster acceleration times.

The Bottom Line

The Porsche Cayenne and Tesla Model X is the top performing SUVs in their class. Despite this, the back doors of the Model X are a bit gimmicky, when fully upgraded its cost can easily exceed six figures, and it lacks the spaciousness of the Porsche, so the Cayenne wins.
