The 2018 Porsche Cayenne is a truly a regal SUV, with amenities found in few other vehicles. Its top trim is virtually unrivaled, and when combined with its potent engines and superlative handling it is truly a force to be reckoned with. The 2018 Mercedes Benz GLE is a true challenger however, with its powertrain, luxury interior and performance.
Design & Style
The Mercedes Benz GLE Class is boxy, especially in the front, giving it a tough and rugged look. The Porsche Cayenne is very much the opposite of a curvy exterior complete with long and refined lines. Both have spectacular interiors, which are the epitome of comfort. The dashboard and buttons within the Cayenne are all positioned thoughtfully and are easy to reach. The Mercedes GLE is a joy just to sit in, let alone drive, with leather soft enough to relax a newborn.
Technology & Safety
For starters, the Porsche Cayenne has a slight advantage in fuel economy, with 24 mpg versus 23 mpg for the Mercedes. Both SUVs hold a maximum of five passengers and are almost tied when it comes to interior room. This excludes the cargo area, where the Mercedes Benz GLE has 80.3 cubic feet available for storage while the Porsche Cayenne only has 62.9 cubic feet. Both vehicles have done well on crash tests and each employ a standard four-wheel anti-brake system. Both SUVs have about the same capacity in their fuel tanks.
While each of these vehicles incorporates rack pinion steering, the Porsche Cayenne is substantially more powerful when it comes to trailering capacity. It can haul a maximum of 7,716 pounds, while the Mercedes Benz GLE can only haul up to 6,600 pounds. The Porsche Cayenne also has a higher capacity for its alternator, and each SUV houses the same type of engine, which is the V6 Premium Unleaded. When it comes to horsepower both vehicles are essentially tied, with the Porsche Cayenne producing 300 horsepower at 6300 rpm while the Mercedes Benz GLE produces 302 horsepower at 6500 rpm.
The Bottom Line
The Mercedes Benz GLE and Porsche Cayenne are close across the board, and when one surpasses the other for a given metric, it is usually by a relatively small margin. However, the Mercedes has a number of problems which hamper its potential. First, it isn’t that fuel efficient; wants additional cash for AMG and its infotainment interface is added. Therefore, although the two are closely matched, the Porsche Cayenne wins.
