2018 Porsche Cayenne vs. 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Both the 2018 Porsche Cayenne and 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport are top of the line, mid-sized luxury SUVs that rival each other in performance and comfort. The Land Rover has been praised for its off-road capabilities, while the Cayenne impresses with its powerful engine. Which should you buy?

Design & Style

One glance at the Porsche Cayenne makes it clear this SUV was designed for those with expensive tastes. The outer shell is elegant and curvy, with lines that are as smooth as an ocean wave. Inside the interior is spectacular, with well-placed seats and controls made out of the highest quality materials. The Range Rover Sport differs with its angular design, especially in the interior; with an inside that is no less gorgeous. The dimensions in the interior are almost identical at 39.6 inches for the Cayenne and 39.5 inches for the Range Rover Sport.

Technology & Safety

Both SUVs have performed well on safety and crash tests. The Porsche Cayenne has a fuel economy of 18 mpg while the Range Rover is 17 mpg. Each holds the same number of passengers, which is a maximum of five. When it comes to cargo space, the two SUVs are practically tied again, at 62.9 cubic feet for the Porsche Cayenne and 62.2 cubic feet for the Range Rover Sport. These SUVs come equipped with all types of gadgets, which range from surround sound to climate control, power and heated seats, connectivity for Bluetooth, satellite radio, lane departure warnings, and a rearview camera. They also have infotainment touch screens. They also each incorporate a four-wheel drive anti-brake system.

The Range Rover Sport has a slightly higher fuel capacity, at 27.3 gallons versus 26.4 gallons for the Porsche Cayenne. Each vehicle uses rack pinion steering and demonstrates the same maximum trailering capacity, which is 7,716 pounds. Although both are powered by a V6 engine, the Porsche Cayenne uses a Premium Unleaded variant while the Range Rover Sport opts for a Premium Unleaded that is Intercooled and Supercharged. This gives the Range Rover Sport a slightly higher horsepower of 332 hp at 3500 rpm versus 295 horsepower at 3000 rpm for the Porsche Cayenne.

The Bottom Line

Both of these SUVs are well matched, with neither dominating in a single area. Although the Range Rover Sport has slightly more horsepower, its third row is too small, it only has a single powertrain that is fuel efficient and its asking price is too high for a vehicle that simply doesn’t do much more than the Porsche, so they Cayenne wins.
