2018 Porsche Cayenne vs. 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is practically a household name when it comes to upscale SUVs. It has premium looks combined with excellent performance and handling, not to mention its many interior comforts. However, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne is a true contender, receiving well-warranted praise for its design, potent engine, handling and cost. Which of these two is best?

Design & Style

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is instantly recognizable with its angular grille and aerodynamic exterior. The 2018 edition isn’t radically different from previous releases but offers enough to please aficionados. The Porsche Cayenne is a real gem, featuring a sophisticated form in the exterior and interior, with ultra-comfortable leather seats and an easy to use dashboard.

Technology & Safety

Safety is the major Achilles Heel of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It simply hasn’t done as well on crash tests as the Porsche Cayenne, and this is a serious flaw which hurts it. Aside from this, it offers a lot of features such as powered seats and doors, Bluetooth connectivity, outstanding infotainment with touch screens and climate control. The Porsche Cayenne offers many of the same features, but with the added advantage of passing its safety tests with flying colors.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a slight edge in fuel economy, at 19 mpg versus 18 mpg for the Porsche Cayenne. When it comes to interior dimensions the two SUVs are practically identical, with 39.6 inches for the Porsche and 39.9 inches for the Jeep. Each holds a maximum of five passengers, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee has slightly more space for cargo, at 68.3 cubic ft versus 62.9 cubic ft for the Porsche Cayenne. Both vehicles come equipped with a standard four-wheel anti-brake system.

The Porsche Cayenne has a higher capacity in its fuel tank, at 26.4 gallons versus 24.6 gallons for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Porsche also shines when it comes to trailering, as it is able to haul a maximum of 7,716 pounds while the Jeep Grand Cherokee maxes out at 3,500 pounds, which is about fifty percent lower. This difference is likely due to the engine because although both use a V6, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has a Regular Unleaded which produces a maximum of 260 horsepower at 4000 rpm while the Porsche Cayenne uses a 295 horsepower engine with 3000 rpm.

The Bottom Line

Both of these SUVs have a lot going for them, in terms of cost, performance and handling. However, the Jeep Grand Cherokee underperforms in the areas that count the most, which are its safety and performance ratings, so the Porsche Cayenne wins.
