For years, the Porsche 718 Boxster has remained at the top of its class. Its presence, speed and engine have always made it stand out from the crowd, and the 2018 edition introduces a new GTS. However, rivals often emerge from unexpected places, and the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT is a case in point. Its swagger, depth and race track performance make it a real force to be reckoned with. Which of the two should you buy?
Design & Style
The Dodge Challenger SRT opts for a retro design reminiscent of muscle cars manufactured during the 1970s, which has delighted both the young and old alike. It has two large doors, wide hips, a roof which is low slung, and an interior which is dedicated to the driver. Inset grilles can be seen in front, with pronounced rear haunches and slabs on the side. The Porsche 718 Boxster, by contrast, opts for smooth and elegant curves. While the lines are sharper than in previous editions, it is sleeker than its rival.
Technology & Safety
The Porsche Boxster is well equipped for driver and passenger safety. Aside from multiple airbags, it also has stability control and intelligent traction, along with cruise control that is adaptive, monitoring for blind spots, parking sensors and lane control. Within the cabin, passengers will enjoy touchscreens which are seven inches, support for USB, and an audio system with six speakers, USB ports, leather or suede seats and climate control.
Safety ratings for the Dodge Challenger SRT are mixed. It is devoid of many of the technologies found in the Porsche, and even though the NHTSA has given it favorable safety scores, those who have tested it independently do not, largely because it does not provide drivers with automatic emergency brakes. It does have six airbags, rearview camera, stability control and antilock brakes, and within the cabin, passengers will enjoy climate control, Apple CarPlay, touch screens, ventilated seats which can be heated, and an Alpine audio system.
The performance offered by the Dodge Challenger is respectable. The SRT variant comes with a V8, 6.4-liter engine that can produce a mammoth 485 horsepower with 476 pounds of torque, and it can be further upgraded to a vehicle fully capable of competing in professional races. The Porsche Boxster GTS is also a dynamite, capable of producing a maximum of 365 horsepower with 317 pounds of torque, which allows it to reach sixty miles per hour in a little more than 3 seconds.
The Bottom Line
Both of these cars are gorgeous, fast, and fun to drive. The Challenger, for its part, is a true touring car, which is why the decision of Dodge choosing not to incorporate the latest safety features makes little sense, so the Porsche 718 Boxster wins, as it offers tremendous speed without compromising safety.
